SnowRanger and Garmin® nüvi®, Oregon, Colorado, Edge 605/705 and zūmo®

SnowRanger maps look fantastic on the big bright screens of Garmin's nüvi series of "personal navigation devices" (PNDs), the zūmo motorcycle-oriented series, cycling Edge 605/705, and the new Dakota, Oregon and Colorado outdoors series.

Just push Buy Now next to the SnowRanger set that you want to buy, and choose microSD Card for Garmin or SD Card for Garmin depending on which size memory card your GPS takes. (If you are not sure, choose SD Card, as we ship that as a microSD card with an SD adapter sleeve.)

You can also choose the CD-ROM for Garmin option if you would like to install SnowRanger across a USB cable from your PC.

Garmin nuvi screenshot Please note that nüvis do not have the same temperature and waterproofness ratings as Garmin's outdoors GPS models, so use common sense in keeping your nüvi dry and not too cold on the mountain, for example, by keeping it in a jacket pocket while you are skiing/snowboarding, like you would a cellphone or MP3 player.

Showing SnowRanger Maps on your nüvi or zūmo

When using SnowRanger maps on a nüvi or zūmo you may wish to temporarily turn off the built-in street map while on-mountain, and make sure the SnowRanger maps are turned on.

  • On your nüvi, go to Settings (the wrench on the main screen)
  • Choose Maps, then Map Info
  • This will show a list of installed maps, with check boxes next to them. Uncheck the built in street map (City Navigator usually) and make sure the SnowRanger item is checked.
  • (This technique also works by the way with Garmin MapSource® Topo maps, which otherwise would also be hidden by the built-in street maps on the nüvi or zūmo.)
  • When you need your street maps back, just put the check mark next to them again in Map Info.

Some nüvi models do not record track logs

A popular feature of GPSes is recording a "breadcrumb" track of your activities. At the end of your ski day you can upload, analyze and view the track on our website using our SnowRanger Uplink feature, and you can also bring it into Google Earth, Garmin MapSource, Magellan VantagePoint and many other mapping software programs.

Be aware though that the 300, 600 and 2x0 series nüvis do not record such a track log (though they fully support SnowRanger maps). The 500, 700, 800, 1200, 1300 and 2x5 series nüvis do. If you want to get a nüvi for the big screen and the other excellent features you may also want to get either a cheap basic GPS, such as a Garmin eTrex® H or Geko 201, or a fitness watch model, such as a Forerunner 305, to record your ski track and statistics.
