Skiocaching

Skiocaching - Ski Resort GPS Treasure Hunt

Skiocaching is a GPS-based treasure hunt held at a ski resort. Now you can ski/snowboard while also testing your wits and navigation skills!

At the beginning of the day we give out a list of 7-10 latitude/longitude coordinates, each with a question or riddle to be answered. You navigate your way to each of the locations, and you'll find the answer to the question on the building, hut, or other object there. Return the list of answers to us, and enter a drawing for the Grand Prize (see below). It's a fun enhancement to a day on the slopes, and all the locations are on or next to trails and lifts so there's no walking, boot packing, or traversing involved.

Update: Thanks to all the people who took part in the 2006/07 season of Skiocaching. We drew the winner--a Kirkwood participant from Folsom, CA--on March 6th, and shipped the grand prize, a Magellan 500 LE preloaded with SnowRanger maps of California/Nevada.
Check back here in November for news on Skiocaching for 2007/08!

Here is the calendar for the 2006/07 season:

  • Northstar at Tahoe, Friday January 5th
  • Kirkwood, Saturday January 20th
  • Kirkwood, Saturday March 3rd
We'll be setup in the main plaza at the base area, in or near Expedition Kirkwood, at 8am. Stop by to get the coordinates and clues on paper, and we can optionally load the waypoints onto your Magellan or Garmin GPS (so long as we have a compatible cable). You can also get a free install of the SnowRanger Kirkwood trail map if you have a compatible Garmin GPS.
You can download a GPX file containing the 8 waypoint locations ahead of time if you want to preload your GPS. Then just stop by and pick up the clues on Saturday morning.

Sign-up for our monthly Newsletter and we'll keep you up-to-date with Skiocaching news as it develops.

Magellan has contributed the Grand Prize for the events, an eXplorist 500LE GPS receiver! Magellan is also partnering with Subaru, Kirkwood Mountain Resort, and Sacramento's KCRA-TV Channel 3 to offer six lucky winners a Kirkwood Powder Cat tour, accomodation, and a GPS during the season. More...

If you work for a ski resort that there is a SnowRanger GPS map for (list), and would like to host a Skiocaching event at your mountain, please contact us as soon as possible.

Mountain Dynamics offers a complete range of information services for the skier/snowboarder. You can keep a journal of your Snow Days, upload and share the "tracks" from your GPS showing your complete paths around the resorts and view them on a SnowRanger resort map.
