| Waterproof nuvi 500 series coming in third quarter |
There are going to be not one but two contenders this fall for the title of Best Skiing GPS to use with our SnowRanger GPS trail maps. As we recently announced there's a new touchscreen outdoors series called the Oregon coming, and now we can reveal that there is a new, more rugged nuvi series, the 500, on the way.
As announced today on GPS Tracklog and GPS Review the nuvi 500 and nuvi 550 will be the first waterproof (IPX7, so technically water resistant, like most Garmin outdoors models) nuvis.
The 500 will coming preloaded with topo maps while the 550 will come with street maps. Each has a microSD card, so if you buy the 500 you can add street maps, and vice versa, and both should be a fantastic GPS for SnowRanger ski maps. Battery life is expected to be 8 hours, and although the Li-ion battery is proprietary it is removable. Both support turn-by-turn directions and can support real time traffic data with optional receivers.
Accessories include a "Scooter Mount" suggesting that this is being positioned as a sort of chic urban "zumo for Vespas!"
We'll be attending the London Motor Show later this week and hopefully we'll get some hands-on time with a real unit at the Garmin booth. Both models should be available in the fall, and both are currently showing the same $499.99 retail price.
