As Mountain Dynamics develops and publishes our SnowRanger GPS ski resort maps we are building up a considerable database of mapping data. As of now for example we have the detailed paths (and other information) of 3026 trails (ski runs) at 37 resorts, 449 chair lifts, and 137 lodges! Since we also have detailed contour maps we'll soon be creating "digital elevation models" of each resort and using that to publish new views of resort information such as the elevation profile of each of those 3026 runs. In the meantime, here are some "fun facts" mined out of our data. Ever noticed how the same trail names seem to keep appearing at different resorts? In our database here are the ones that are used most often: 9 times: Sundance 8 times: Exhibition 7 times: Easy Street 6 times: International, Prospector, High Traverse, Juniper, Home Run, Columbine, Waterfall, and Last Chance How prevalent are high speed lifts? High Speed (detachable grip) Quads have become the workhorse of the modern resort, but clearly many resorts have left a lot of traditional triples and doubles in place. Here are the top lift types: High Speed Quad - 132 Double (fixed grip) - 125 Triple (fixed grip) - 98 Quad (fixed grip) - 26 Gondola - 20 High Speed 6 - 17 We also have 5 trams, and a rare high speed double (Ruthies) at Aspen Mountain, and high speed triple (Sunnyside) at Alta.
