Garmin have a rather unusual wireless beacon called the . Designed for , the chirp can send coordinate and other information to nearby compatible GPS units, such as the , or . The idea is you put the chirp inside a hidden , then as geocachers get near they can receive either hints as to the cache's exact hiding place, or the latitude/longitude of the next cache in a multistage hunt.

Battery life is around a year, and it'll be interesting to see if gadget lovers come up with other innovative uses for the device. You could carry a chirp in your pocket for example, so that geocachers in the vicinity could detect you coming and get your introduction before you come into sight!
