Don't look out of your window - read the snow report!
ScienceDaily that researchers at the University of New Hampshire have identified a "backyard effect" in ski resort attendance. Lift ticket sales are more strongly correlated with snowfall in nearby urban areas that they are at resorts themselves.

In a paper published in the December issue of the International Journal of Climatology, an inch of snowfall in Boston led to 63% more ticket sales at Cannon and Gunstock resorts that an inch at the resorts.

Certainly looking out of your window and seeing fresh snow is likely to prompt thoughts of skiing, and the paper also points out that lesser amounts of snow on the ground may encourage other, more local, active pursuits.

Clearly with the Internet, snow reports are very easy to review, and, as the researchers say, "If this backyard effect reflects ignorance, then education is the cure -- skiers could be persuaded that great skiing exists in the mountains, even when their backyard is bare."
